Practice Standards Unit (SRA)

The Practice Standards Unit ('PSU') of the SRA conducts a routine monitoring programme of law firms for compliance with various key regulatory requirements. Originally an attempt to be more proactive in relation to complaints handling, the PSU now forms part of the SRA. The intention is always to assist firms, but it is made clear that as representatives of the SRA it will not be possible to overlook serious misconduct issues that may arise.

The experience of most firms is that they are apprehensive about the process, but do find the outcome constructive. This much was admitted by Karen Nokes,  Head of the Unit, in an update from the SRA of August 2009:

We are not the most welcome of guests, but attitudes are changing. Law firms are now recognising that we really can be a great help to them.

Nonetheless, most firms will want to be in order before a visit occurs. Our work with firms is both before and after a visit. Beforehand we will check key systems and processes against the most common non-compliances. After the event we can assist with the drafting and other changes that are commonly required in the 'action plan' that is likely to be addressed to the firm.
